JSS 2 FIRST TERM 2023 WEEK FOUR LESSON NOTE
JSS 2
TOPIC: The Computer System
OBJECTIVE:
At the end of this topic you should be able to:
1. Define computer system
2. State the components of the computer system.
Introduction:
The computer system is described as collections of different electronic components which enables it to accept data (input), process data and produce information (output.)
Computer system: a computer system is any electronic machine or device which under the control of a stored program, can accept data in a prescribed form, process the data and supply the results as information in a specified format.
Components of the computer system
1. Hardware components
2. Software components
3. Peopleware components
Hardware component: the hardware components consists of parts that can be physically seen with the naked eye. Such as CPU, Memory Unit, Input unit or devices, Output unit or devices.
Hardware Components of the computer system
- Hardware components
- Input unit. E.g . Keyboard and mouse.
- Memory unit. E.g. RAM and ROM
- Control unit
- Arithmetic and logic unit (ALU)
- Output unit. e.g. Monitor and printer.
- External storage devices. E.g. Hard disk, optical disks, flash drives, floppy disk. Etc.
Software Components: computer software is a step by step instruction used to instruct computer on what to do. It is a collection of coded set of instructions (program) that helps hardware to function effectively.
Types or classes of software
- System software. E.g. Operating system, Translators and utilities.
- Application software. E.g. user programs and packages.
Peopleware Component: these are set of people that give meaning to the usage of computer. Computer systems need people to operate or work with it or instruct it before it can produce the desired results.
There are two major classes of people ware or human ware. These are:
- Computer professionals
- Computer users
Examples of Computer professionals
- Computer engineers
- System analysts
- Programmers
- Data processing managers
Examples of Computer users
- Bankers
- Doctors
- Architects
