TOPIC:  MASTERY OF THE KEYBOARD

Introduction

A computer keyboard is the most commonly used input device. It is defined as the set of typewriter-like keys that enables you to enter data into a computer or other devices. Computer keyboard are similar to electric-typewriters but contain additional typing keys. The standard arrangement of alphabetic keys on the keyboard is known as the QWERTY. The computer keyboard could be wired or wireless.

Types of keyboard

There are different types of keyboard depending on what they are used for. Some have more keys than the others. Keyboards also come in different shapes but basically a keyboard has regular shape. The types of keyboards are:


a)     Enhanced keyboard

b)    Standard keyboard

 

c)     Windows keyboard

d)    AT keyboard


 Sections of the Keyboard

The keyboard is divided into the following sections:


a)     Alphabetical keys

b)    Numeric keys

c)     Alphanumeric keys

 

d)    Function keys

e)     Cursor and monitor control keys

f)      Special-purpose keys


Alphabetical keys: this section of the keyboard is similar to a typewriter. It takes a broad part of the keyboard. They are made up of English alphabets A to Z and other special characters like comma, full stop, question mark etc.

 

Numeric keys: numeric keys are the other part of a computer keyboard. Usually it is located at the right side of the keyboard. It is arranged like a standard calculator used to enter numerical data.

 

Alphanumeric keys: they contain alphanumeric character i.e. a to z, A to Z and special character such as comma (,) full stop (.), question mark (?) etc. these alphabets could be in upper case (capital letters) or lower case (small letters) depending on choice of use.

Function keys: the function keys are located at the top of a keyboard and grouped in to four. There are 12 function keys starting from F1 through F12

Cursor and monitor control: these keys are found between the typing keyboard and the numeric keypad. The cursor control keys are also called the navigator keys or the arrow keys.

Special-purpose keys: these are keys that perform specialized functions. Examples are control key, shift key, alternative key, spacebar, backspace etc.
