JSS 2 WEEK TWO LESSON NOTE_FIRST TERM 2023

Jss2

TOPIC: CLASSIFICATION OF COMPUTER BY GENERATION

OBJECTIVE

At the end of this topic you should be able to:

1. List the criteria for classifying computers.

        I.                 2. State the features of computers classified based on technological age.

Introduction

Computers can be classified into different categories based on different criteria.

Basically, computers can be classified based on the following criteria:

1.     Size.

2.     Types

3.     Generation

4.     Purpose or versatility

Based on the technological Age of the computer, computers can be classified into:

·        First generation

·        Second generation

·        Third generation

·        Fourth generation

·        Fifth generation

First generation Computers

The first-generation computers were developed during the second world war to design flying bombs and missiles used for the war. Examples of first-generation computers are COLOSSUS, ENIAC etc.

They have the following features:

1.     They are big and occupy lots of space, approximately 140m

2.     They generate lots of heat

3.     They make lots of noise

4.     They make use of vacuum tubes.

5.     They have low storage capacity

Second Generation Computers

Second generation computers made use of transistors which was invented in 1948.Examples are: IBM 7090, IBM 1401.

They have the following features:

1.     Introduction of transistors

2.     They are smaller and occupy lesser space compared to the first.

3.     They generate less heat and make less noise.

4.     They are faster and more efficient than the first

Third Generation Computers

This generation of computers use simple integrated circuits in its build up. Examples are: IBM 360, IBM 370

They have the following features:

1.     Introduction of desktop computers

2.     They are compact and durable compared to second generation computers

3.     They generate less heat and make less noise

4.     They consume less energy and have more storage capacity

5.     They have higher processing speed and accuracy compared to the second.

Generation Based on Their Purpose/Degree of Versatility

Computers can be grouped into two, based on their purpose or the degree of versatility: they include

1.     General purpose computer

2.     Special purpose computer

General purpose computers: they are computers used to perform many functions e.g. laptop

Special purpose computers: these are computers that are specially designed to perform or carry out a single task.
