TOPIC: COMPUTER NETWORK
Introduction
Networking refers to connecting two or more
devices to allow communication between them with the purpose of sharing
information and resources. Examples of these devices are computers, printers,
routers hubs, modems and PDAs.
Computer Network
A computer network is a group of computers
linked to each other that enables the computer to communicate with another
computer and share their resources, data and applications.
TYPES OF COMPUTER NETWORK
A computer network is mainly of four types:
1.
PAN (Personal Area Network)
2.
LAN (Local Area Network)
3.
MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)
4.
WAN (Wide Area Network)
PAN
Personal Area Network is a network arranged
with individual person typically within a range of 10 meters. It is used for
connecting computer devices of personal use.
LAN
Local Area Network is a group of computers
connected to each other in a small area such as a building, office. It is used
for connecting two or more personal computers through a communication medium
such as a twisted pair, coaxial cable etc.
MAN
Metropolitan Area Network is a network that
covers a larger geographic area by interconnecting different LAN to form a
larger network.
WAN
Wide Area Network is a network that extends
over a larger geographical area such as a state or countries. It is not limited
to a single location but spans over a large geographical area through a
telephone line, fiber optic cables or satellite links.
