TOPIC: File Sharing
Introduction
Computer files are the most basic unit of data that
users can store on a disk. Every program, image, video, song, and document are
stored as a file.
FILE SHARING: It is defined
as public or private sharing of data in a network which cannot be accessed by everyone.
File sharing allows a selected number of people to read, view or edit it.
TYPES OF FILE SHARING: Here are
the most common ways of sharing and distributing files online
i. File
Transfer Protocol (FTP): The FTP is used for accessing or editing files
among a number of users with a password making it impossible for an outsider to
access the file. It is usually used by bankers.
ii. Peer-to-peer
networks (P2P network): Here you can share files without actually
using the internet server
iii. Removable
storage media: This file sharing device removed or inserted in a
computer for the purpose of sharing files stored in it. Examples: the use of
flash drive, use of memory card, removable hard disk.
iv. Online
sharing service: Online sharing service is a web service that allows
users to store or share data on the internet for personal or professional use.
A member may upload photos, music or video online, the file sharing platform
will allow others using same platform to download the files.
Risks Involved In File Sharing
i. Downloading
a file that may contain virus
ii. Accidentally
uploading of sensitive files in public, which can’t be retrieved when others
download it to their phones.
iii. Loss
of privacy since a third-party whom the file is not meant for can access it
through a friend.
Benefits of File Sharing:
i. Easy
assessment of desired piece of information
ii. Saves
time because you can easily retrieve the information from the group that shared
the file, instead of surfing the internet and searching tirelessly for the
piece of information.
iii. Reduces
storage space. Since the information still remains in the online group
platform, it can be downloaded anytime you desire even if there is no space in
your computer or smartphone.
