TOPIC: THE INTERNET

Introduction

The internet can be defined as a network of computers, designed to receive and send data in the form of emails, media, blogs and webcast etc. it is like a super-massive server, filled with seemingly infinite information and used by many people at the same time.

Basic internet terminology

i.                   Internet service provider: a company, which provides users with an access to the internet, is an internet service provider or internet access provider ISP.

ii.                 Internet protocol suite: it is a set of communication protocols, which are used for the internet. Transmission control protocol (TCP) and Internet protocol (IP) were the two pioneering protocols to be introduced in the internet protocol standard.

iii.               www: is a collection of interlinked documents that are accessible over the internet. It consists of millions of web pages that contain text, images, voices and videos.

iv.               Website: a website is a set of web pages consisting of text, audio and video. Web servers host websites.

v.                 Home page: the term home page is used to refer to the page that is the default page of any website.

vi.               Web browser: a web browser is a software application that facilitates user interaction with text, audio video and other information that is located on the web.  

vii.             HTTP: Hypertext Transfer Protocol, is a communications protocol used for the transfer of information over the internet.

viii.          Modem: it is a device that modulates analog carrier signals to encode digital information and demodulates carrier signals to decode information.

ix.               Internet search engine: it is an information retrieval system that is designed to help find information over the internet.

Advantages of internet

1.     Faster communication

2.     Information resources

3.     Entertainment

4.     Social networking

5.     Online services

6.     E-commerce

Disadvantages of internet

1.     Theft of personal information

2.      Spamming

3.     Virus threat

4.     Pornography

5.     Social disconnect

  Ss2 TOPIC:   HANDLING COMPUTER FILES Introduction File operation deals with the physical movement of data in and out of files. User programs effectively use file operations through appropriate programming language syntax. The file management system manages the independent files and acts as the software interfaces between the user programs and file operations. Basic Operations of Computer Files 1.     Insertion: records must be inserted at the place dictated by the sequence of the keys. As   obvious, direct insertion into the main data file would   lead to frequent rebuilding of the file. This problem could be mitigated by reserving overflow areas in the file for insertions.
