TOPIC: COMPUTER SYSTEM SOFTWARE
Introduction
Software, commonly known as programs consists
of all the electronic instructions that tells the hardware how to perform a
task.
System Software
System software are set of
instructions that are embedded into hardwares from the manufacturer of those
hardware to allow for proper functionality of the hardware.
Classification of
System Software
System software can be classified into
three types. They are:
1. Operating system
2.
Translators
3.
Utilities
Operating System
An operating system or OS is a
software program that enables the computer hardware to communicate and operate
with the computer software. without an operating system a computer would be
useless.
Types of
Operating System
1. Real-time
Operating system (RTOS): a real-time operating system processes inputs
simultaneously, fast enough to affect the next input or process
2. Single-user,
single task: a single user OS, as the name suggests is designed for one user to
effectively use a computer at a time. This operating system is designed to
manage the computers so that one user can effectively do one thing at a time.
3. Single-user,
multitasking: this is the type of operating system most people use on their
desktop and laptop computes today. It entirely makes a user to be writing a
note in word processor while downloading a file from the internet and also
printing a text of an email message
4. Multi-user:
multiuser operating system allows many different users to take advantage of the
computer resources simultaneously.
5. Distributed
operating systems: in distributed operating systems; programs and files may be
stored on different storage devices which are located in different geographical
locations and may be accessed from different computer terminals.
