TOPIC: COMPUTER ETHICS II

Introduction

People misuse computers and the internet in several ways unknown to them. We shall take a look at some of the ways of misusing the computer and the internet.

 

Misuse of Computers and the Internet

1.     Invasion of privacy: in a network environment, people can use a computer on the network to gain illegal access to files and other information. such as unauthorized access is known as hacking. Hackers can also access computes to collect private information about individuals or delete important information.

2.     Computer virus: people can deliberately introduce a virus into a computer system or network via fictious emails, infected diskettes etc.

3.     Fraud: false data and information are sent through emails and mailing list to fraudulently collect money and other items from unsuspecting victims.

4.     Pornography: unscrupulous people use the internet to promote and distribute pornographic materials.

5.     Piracy: many people use CD or DVD writers in computers to make illegal copies of software and other material such as music, films etc.

6.     Plagiarism: plagiarism is the act of copying another person’s intellectual work such as a book, music etc. and presenting it as one’s own. It is a serious crime and many institutions of higher learning have dismissed students and staff as a result of plagiarism. Computers and the internet have made it easy to get access to and copy other people’s work

  Ss2 TOPIC:   HANDLING COMPUTER FILES Introduction File operation deals with the physical movement of data in and out of files. User programs effectively use file operations through appropriate programming language syntax. The file management system manages the independent files and acts as the software interfaces between the user programs and file operations. Basic Operations of Computer Files 1.     Insertion: records must be inserted at the place dictated by the sequence of the keys.
