Topic: Application of ICT
Introduction
Computer conferencing is an
emerging area for distance education and communication. Research shows that
learning from new technology is as effective as the traditional method.
Teleconferencing
Teleconferencing
Types of teleconferencing
1. Audio teleconferencing (voice only): it is sometimes called conference calling. It
interactively links people in remote locations via telephone lines.
2. Audio graphics teleconferencing: uses narrow band
telecommunications channels to transmit visual information such as graphics,
alpha-numeric, documents, video, and pictures as an adjunct to voice
communication.
3. Computer teleconference: uses telephone lines to connect two or more computers and modems.
4. Video teleconference: combines audio and video to provide voice communication and video
images. It can be one-way video, two-way audio, or two-way video, two-way
audio.
Advantages of teleconferencing
1. Communication
between the home, office and field staff is maximized
2. Participants
are generally better prepared than FTF meeting.
3. Group members
participate more equally in well moderated telecommunications than FTF meeting.
4. Some routine
meetings are more effective since one can audio conference from any location
with telephones.
Disadvantage of teleconferencing
1. Technical
failures with equipment, including connections that aren’t made
2. Impersonal,
less easy to create an atmosphere for group rapport
3. Acoustical
problems within the teleconferencing rooms.
4. Informal,
one-to-one, social interaction not possible.
