Introduction
In
computing, series of data and information are worked on. It is very possible to
forget the actual location where one has stored a particular data on a personal
computer or could not even remember where the data or information is located on
the internet. A software application has be designed to help solve this problem
of finding data either the location is known or unknown. This program is
referred to as a SEARCH ENGINE.
Search Engine:
A search
engine is an information retrieval system that helps to locate data or
information either on a personal computer or on the WWW network. It is a
computer program designed to search for documents containing a particular word
or words on the internet.
Search
engine presents or brings to the user the locations of all the documents that
the search word or phrase is contained and by so doing, it makes information
retrieval easy.
A search
engine is a web based tool that enables users to search for and identify items
in a database that correspond to a special keyword(S) and returns a list of the documents where they are located. On
the WWW.

There are
numerous search engines, some of the common ones are:

Uses of search Engines
The internet
is a vast resource of information. Search engine is an important tool to locate
information and retrieve them. Benefits of search engines are:

It enables easy search for
information on the internet

It helps in locating or
finding the addresses of a website
III.
It helps in downloading of
files or document
IV.
It is used to search
newsgroup posting, online and offline events and perform services such as chat,
instant messaging and product, searches for online shopping.
V.
Search engine provides search
access to database of third parties, which allow one to search through
co-operate reports, telephone listings, zip code and so on.
How to use a search engine
When
searching, there are some rules to kept in mind. The more precise that you are
the more accurate the result would be. For instance, to know more about an easy
way to simplify a search is to place quotes around the search word or phrase.
For example, “social studies”, ‘use of the internet”, “why student fail” etc.
this would help focus the word combination.
