TOPIC: FUNDAMENTAL COMPUTER OPERATION
Introduction
For
you to be able to access a computer resource to perform any task, it must be
setup properly. Setting up a computer is the process of connecting
appropriately all the various components together. The input devices and other
devices must be well connected.
Booting the Computer System
Booting
is the process of ‘starting up’ a computer system i.e. preparing computer for
use. It can be compared to the ‘kick-starting’ of a moto car. Booting is an
automatic process of checking for availability of connected parts of the system
unit.
Types of Booting
1. Cold booting
2. Warm booting
Cold booting: is a method of
staring up a computer system by turning on the power switch of the system unit
and the monitor.
Warm booting: is the re-booting
or restarting of a computer system that is already on.
Steps for booting a computer system
Steps
for cold booting:
o Connect your
computer power cable to electricity power source
o Switch on the
electricity power supply
o Press the
power switch button on the system unit
o Press the
power switch button on the monitor (VDU)
It will display light and some icons
on the screen, meaning that it is ready for operation.
Steps for warm booting:
Simply
press the reset button on the system unit or press ALT, CTRL and DEL at the
same time. This can be done as follows:
o Hold down the
ALT and CTRL keys at the same time
o Press DEL key
as you hold down the other two keys
o Release your
fingers
Shutting down a computer system
The
steps involved in shutting down a computer system are as follows:
o Close all
programs, files or folders that are open.
o Click start
on the task bar, a menu appears
o Click on turn
of computer (or shutdown) on the menu
