TOPIC: DATA AND INFROMATION
Introduction
These terms are interchangeably, loosely or
confusingly used at times. The word data has precise and distinct meaning which
differentiates it from information. However, data are vital tools used for
carrying out processing.
Data: are raw or basic facts from which information is
deduced. It is the record of the daily transaction of an organization e.g.
Date, amount of goods on invoice, details of pay slip, numbers of hours worked,
number of students admitted in a year, number of books supplied in the school
library etc.
Information: is an analyzed or processed data, in a
meaningful way for decision making. Information is manipulated through a
processing system (either manual or manipulated) and becomes a meaningful and
useful results obtained from data processing.
