TOPIC:  COMMUNICATION SYSTEM III

Introduction

Various computer network configurations are possible depending on the needs of an organization. Local area networks (LAN) joins computers at a particular site, such as an office building or an academic campus. Metropolitan area networks (MAN) cover a limited densely populated area. Wide area networks (WAN) connects widely distributed data centers frequently run by different organizations.

GSM: Global System for Mobile communications is a digital cellular phone technology which started in Europe and migrated to other continents. The SIM card GSM phones use a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) smart card that contains user information.

PAN: this is a computer network organized around an individual person. Personal area networks typically involve a mobile computer. A cell phone or a handheld computing device such as a PDA. Personal networks generally cover a range of less than 10meters (about 30 feet). PAN can be constructed with cables or they can be wireless. USB (Universal Serial Bus) and firewire technologies often link together a wired PAN while wireless PANs use Bluetooth or sometimes infrared connections.

LAN: local area network is a relatively smaller and privately owned network with a maximum

Span of 10km to provide local connectivity within a building or small geographical area.

MAN: Metropolitan area network is defined as less than 50km and provides regional connectivity, typically within a campus or small geographical area. It is designed as less to extend over an entire city.

WAN: wide area network provides no limit of distance. In most WAN the subnet consist of two distinct component: Transmission lines also called circuits or channels, and routers. Transmission lines are used for moving bits between machines whereas routers are used to connect two or more transmission lines. A WAN that is wholly owned by a single company is often referred to as an enterprise network.

INTERNET:  the internet is referred to as “network” of “network”. Its is the largest network system. The internet is a global network connecting millions of computers. the internet is an international system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard internet protocol suite to connect users worldwide.

GPS:  Global Positioning System is a constellation of 24 well-spaced satellite that orbit the earth and make it possible for people with ground receivers to pinpoint their geographical location.
