TOPIC:  INFORMATION STORAGE AND RETRIEVAL

Introduction

 

Storage is one of the greatest attributes of the computer system. Storage is needed in all the stages, be it input, processing or output. For the computer to perform computation, the instructions needed to carry out this task are stored somewhere it would be fetched from.

Information storage

It involves the process of keeping data and information in a storage device for future use, for documentation purpose, for reference purpose for re-usability or for transfer purpose.

Types of Data File

Basically, files can be divided into three, based on the type of data that they store. They include:

1.     Data files

2.     Application file

3.     System file

 

Data File: these are files that are generated when an application is used. For example, the document file generated from using Microsoft word, excel, chat history on Facebook messenger, WhatsApp, games etc.

Application file: these are programs written to make the application perform what it has been designed for. They are data that make up part of the application. Deleting such file might result into malfunctioning of the software or might make such application not to run at all.

System file: these are the most important files on the computer system. They involve the series of programs that allow the computer system to function. They are either operating system, translator or any utility program.

  Ss2 TOPIC:   HANDLING COMPUTER FILES Introduction File operation deals with the physical movement of data in and out of files. User programs effectively use file operations through appropriate programming language syntax. The file management system manages the independent files and acts as the software interfaces between the user programs and file operations. Basic Operations of Computer Files 1.     Insertion: records must be inserted at the place dictated by the sequence of the keys. As   obvious, direct insertion into the main data file would   lead to frequent rebuilding of the file. This problem could be mitigated by reserving overflow areas in the file for insertions.
