TOPIC: Internet and Computer Virus           

Introduction

Computer virus is a program that spreads by first infecting files or the software areas of a computer, then replicates or makes copies of it. They can disrupt the efficacy of the computer because irregular screen activities destroy the secondary storage devices.

Types of Computer Virus

There are three types of virus, they are:

1.     Boot sector virus: it affects by replicating code in the boot sector of a floppy disk or hard disk with its own code.

2.     Executive file virus: this is a non-resident computer virus that stores itself in an execution file and infects other files each time the file runs.

3.     Attach on document virus: this type of virus infects documents directly and it could make the document not to open, empty the document or even delete the document.

1.     Trojan horse

2.     Logic or time bomb

3.     Melisa virus

4.     Princess Diana virus

5.     World cup virus

6.     I love you virus

7.     Sleeper

8.     Alabama virus

9.     Christmas virus

 


Sources of Virus


1.     Infected diskettes

2.     Infected CD Rom

3.     Internet downloads

4.     Emails

5.     Other external devices like flash, memory card, hard disk, etc.

6.     Illegal application software


Virus warning signs


1.     Poor response time

2.     Presence of tiny dots

3.     Wondering across of the screen

4.     Incomplete saving of file

5.     Corruption of system setup instruction

6.     Appearance of strange characters


Effect of virus

Computer virus has lots of adverse effect on the computer system. The most common are:

1.     Loss of data

2.     Corruption of file

3.     Increase in the size of file

4.     Deletion of files on the disk

5.     Automatic mailing of a copy virus to all the email addresses on your email.

User programs effectively use file operations through appropriate programming language syntax. The file management system manages the independent files and acts as the software interfaces between the user programs and file operations.
