TOPIC: Modes of Receiving Information

OBJECTIVES

At the end of this topic you should be able to:

1. State the modes of receiving information.

Introduction

Information can be received by humans through the sense organs and decoded or interpreted by the brain. We can receive information in audio, visual or audio-visual forms.

Audio

This type of information is received in the form of sound(audio). Information received in this form does not give room for seeing the action and reaction of the sender(gesticulation), as it only involves sound and not pictures. Examples of devices or gadgets used in achieving this are: radio, telephone, mobile phone.

Visual

This is the mode that involves vision i.e. information received can only be seen using the sense of vision (eye) only. This is the most common type of information because it does not require highly sophisticated gadgets in its transmission. Examples of devices or gadgets used to achieve this are: writing, prints, mobile phones, fax machine and telex.

Audio-visual

As the name implies, they are information received in form of both sound and pictures. They infuse both the characteristics of audio(sound) and visual (vision). It gives the receiver double chance of seeing information in form of pictures that could be moving (animated pictures), static picture, video (the combination of pictures and sound). This mode is used in presentation, advertisement, films, television program etc. examples of gadgets used to achieve this include: digital video camera, television set, internet, computer, mobile phones/ GSM (video calls).
