TOPIC: Evolution of ICT

OBJECTIVES:

At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:

i.       Define evolution of ICT

ii.      State the five distinct stages of information evolution

       iii.     List some inventors and their inventions 

 Introduction

Over the ages the need for communicating information by man has become more complex and human society has witnessed five distinct stages of information revolution.

EVOLUTION OF ICT
Evolution of ICT is process of changing from simple techniques of data and information processing to complex and advanced methods through inventions and innovations .

STAGES OF INFORMATION EVOLUTION

·        Invention of language

·        Invention of printing

·        Invention of media; particularly media and television

·        Invention of the computer

·        Merging of computers with telecommunications

Invention of language: In every society, humans have developed language as a means of sharing messages and meanings. The invention of language allowed people to express themselves and communicate clearly with each other.

Invention of printing: before the invention of printing all documents were hand written. People known as scribes, recorded and made copies of commercial transaction, legal decisions and pronouncements as well as religious books.

Invention of mass media: the invention of mass broadcast equipment that sent signals through the air such as radio and eventually television, facilitates the transmission of information to large and widely dispersed audience at the same time.

Invention of computer: with the invention of the computer, humans could process complex information more rapidly and accurately than before.

Merging of computer with telecommunications: the merging of computers with telecommunications also called information and communication technology (ICT) has accelerated page of information evolution.  Millions of computers are now linked together with the help of communications systems.

 

INVENTORS AND THEIR INVENTIONS

1.     James Clerk Maxwell: a British physicist in 1873 invented electromagnetic wave theory.

2.     Philo Tylor Farnsworth: an American in 1920 invented an electronic system called television camera.

3.     Sir Williams Crooks: in 1878 developed a cathode ray tube (CRT).

User programs effectively use file operations through appropriate programming language syntax. The file management system manages the independent files and acts as the software interfaces between the user programs and file operations.
