SS1 FIRST TERM 2023 WEEK FIVE LESSON NOTE
Ss 1
TOPIC: Computing Devices
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this topic you should be able to:
1. State the features, components and uses of ENIAC, EDVAC and UNIVAC
Introduction
We shall be taking a look at the features, components and uses of ENIAC, EDVAC and UNIVAC.
ENIAC
Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer was developed between 1942 and 1946 at the university of Pennsylvania by Dr. John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert. ENIAC was the first machine to use more than 2,000 vacuum tubes, using nearly 18000 vacuum tubes. It had punch-card input and output and arithmetically had 1 multiplier, 1 divider-square rooter and 20 adders. In one hour, ENIAC could achieve calculations that would have taken MARK1, one week to perform. The addition of two numbers was achieved in 200 microseconds and multiplication in 2,800 microseconds.
EDVAC
Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer was designed for the US army by the university of Pennsylvania and was completed in the early 50s. EDVAC utilized the sonic delay properties of mercury for storage.
UNIVAC
Universal Automatic Computer was designed by Eckert and Mauchly, builders of the ENIAC. The first UNIVAC computer was delivered to the census bureau in 1951 and was used almost continuously 24hours a day,7 days a week for over 12 years. UNIVAC was among the first computers to use magnetic tape as an input medium. it was well known for its speed, reliability, memory capacity and the ability to handle numeric and descriptive information. It was developed specially for business use.
