TOPIC: Accessing the Internet

OBJECTIVES:

At the end of this topic you should be able to:

1.       1. List the basic requirements needed to access the internet.

  2. Define: www, web page, website and hyperlink 

Introduction

The internet is a collection of computers, all linked to share information worldwide. It is the largest computer network in the world.

 

Connection to the internet

There are four things that are necessary to connect to the internet

1)     A computer with a fast processor and a lot of memory

2)     A modem.  Many computers have a modem inside the CPU- known as an internet modem.

3)     Browser software.  a browser is a program that locates websites on the World Wide Web. (e.g. google chrome, internet explorer, safari etc.)

4)     an account with an Internet Service Provider (ISP)

 

Some Basic Definitions

 

World Wide Web (or web) is a collection of pages of information stored on the computers all over the world that are linked together on the internet using hyperlinks. (texts with links).

 

Web page: A web page is a page or document on the World Wide Web. It may contain text, pictures, sounds or video. Every web page is identified by a unique address or URL(uniform Resource Locator) that allows you to find it among millions of other documents on the World Wide Web. Examples of web addresses are: www.kids.yahoo.com, www.google.com, www.kidsites.com

 

Website A website is collection of web pages. It is similar to a book with different pages. A person can move from one page of website to another by using software known as browser.

 

Hyperlink: A hyperlink connect webpages on the internet. A hyperlink can connect one section of a web page to another section of the same webpages. It can also be used to connect a document to another on the same website or a document on another website anywhere in the world.

User programs effectively use file operations through appropriate programming language syntax. The file management system manages the independent files and acts as the software interfaces between the user programs and file operations.
