JSS1 FIRST TERM 2023 WEEK FOUR LESSON NOTE
Jss 1
TOPIC: Data Processing
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this topic you should be able to:
1. State the methods of data processing.
2. List Data processing cycle
Introduction
Data can be in numerical form e.g. 4, 6, 55 etc. Alphabetical form e.g. A, B, HE, GATE etc.
And alphanumeric form e.g. FUK299KJ, FE/04/101 etc.
Definitions
Data: Data is the plural word for Datum. Data are basic facts or raw facts awaiting processing in order to be more meaningful.
Information: These are processed or refined data. These are data that have been refined and made more meaningful for use.
Data Processing: it is the description of how data is being converted into information. Methods of Data Processing
· Calculating: this involves arithmetic manipulations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division etc.
· Sorting: this involves arranging data in a predestined order or sequence.
· Classifying: This involves putting items or data in a certain category based on their characteristics e.g. age, gender etc.
· Summarizing: This involves condensing certain information in a manner that it is easily identified for use by the user of such information.
Data processing Cycle
Data processing cycles include the following:
a. Data gathering
b. Data collation
c. Input stage
d. Processing stage
e. Storage stage
f. Output stage
Data gathering: This is the state of looking for the data to be processed anywhere it is available. E.g. record of student’s attendance in a school can be found in the attendance register, the number of current account holder in a bank can be found in the bank folder or ledger etc.
Data collation: This is the stage where data gathered will be collated or brought together e.g. student attendance from various schools in a local government is brought together for analysis.
Input stage: This is the stage at which the data is fed into the machine or computer ready for processing.
Processing stage: This is the stage at which the data will be processed depending on the needed information that is anted as the outcome E.g. if the attendance registered is fed-in with the intension of knowing the number of male and female, ages, weight etc. the instruction to the processing machine will carry those indicators and data will be processed by sorting out into those indicators.
Storage stage: this is a stage where the result of the processing of the information is put in memory for short term or long term uses.
Output stage: This is the stage where the result of the processing is displayed or brought out for the users to comprehend and utilize make use of. Note the data processing operation below.
