TOPIC: DATA AND INFORMATION

OBJECTIVE

At the end of this topic you should be able to:

1.       Define Data

2.       Define information

3.       Lists the sources of primary and secondary sources of data and information

      4.    List qualities of good information

Introduction

In everyday communication, the terms DATA and INFORMATION are often used interchangeably. However, there are differences in the two terms which call for a distinction between them.

 

Data: are raw facts. They are figures, words and symbols that have not been processed or put into a meaningful form. Data is the raw material from which information is processed.

Examples of figures: 2,4,5,6,9. Example of words are: book, mummy, john, house, etc. Examples of symbols are: @, #, =, +, %.

 

Information: is processed data. That is, data that has been processed into meaningful and useful form. Information is made of figures, words and symbols that have meanings.

 

Sources of Data and Information

·        Primary sources: primary sources of data and information include those collected firsthand from sources such as; writing in dairies, conducting interviews, paintings taking pictures and photographs, filling forms, or through observation and by carrying out experiments.

·        Secondary sources: secondary sources are data and information sources that has been gathered by other people and recorded in textbooks, magazines, television, the internet, newspapers, government documents, bank reports, a company’s financial statement and other publications.

 

Qualities of Good Information

         I.            It must be suitable and relevant to its purpose.

       II.            It must be accurate- inaccurate information is misinformation.

    III.            It must be comprehensive containing all necessary details.

    IV.            It must be timely- it must be available at the right time it is needed.

      V.            It must come from reliable source so that the user of the information can have confidence in it.

    VI.            It must be meaningful- i.e. concise and expressed in the right form so that the user of the information can understand it.
