      i.     Define Device

ii.      List examples of early counting devices

iii.  Lists limitations of early counting devices

         Introduction

Computers started from early counting devices to mechanical devices; down to the electro-mechanical and to the present electronic device. The computer system has brought about great improvement in the areas of record keeping, data processing or manipulation and other aspect like communication, entertainment, health, education, sport, politics and so on.

        Early counting devices

Before the introduction of mechanical or electronic counting device like the calculator, people kept their records using fingers, stones, beads etc. Our forefathers used stones to represent animals. Immediately an animal leaves its house in the morning, a stone will be moved into another segment and it will be continued in that form for all the animals.

A device: A device is anything made to make our work faster and easy.

Some of The Early Counting Devices

1.     Finger: The early people used their fingers to count and make simple calculation like addition and subtraction.

2.     Stones:  One of the limitations of using stone is that it is heavy to carry from one place to another and it cannot be used for complex computations.

3.     Pebbles: A pebble is a small smooth, round stone. It has a definite shape and size.

4.     Sticks: Sticks are mostly tied in the heaps of ten (10) for easy counting which forms the basics of ten.

5.     Beads: Beads are small piece of colored glass, wood or plastic with a hole through the middle.

6.     Cowries: they are white substance picked on the sea shores. They were also used as a means of counting in the early ages.

Limitations of Early Counting Devices

1.     They are limited in number

2.     They are bulky

3.     They are prone to mistakes or errors

4.     They cannot be used to perform or carry out complex calculations.

5.     They waste lots of time

6.     They are not generally acceptable

7.     They can be falsified or manipulated

8.     Some could be difficult to find
