TOPIC:  COMPUTER PROFESSIONAL BODIES

Introduction

Rules and regulations are to help guide the operation and activities of specific group of people. They are designed by the government through constituted body or bodies or authority in order to control the way something is done or the behavior of certain group. Since computer science is a discipline and profession, it is appropriate that there are regulatory measures put in place to help control and regulate its operation to satisfy this need, the following computer bodies are formed in Nigeria.

1.    Nigeria Computer Society

2.    Computer Professional Registration Council of Nigeria (CPRN)

3.    Information Technology Association of Nigeria (ITAN)  

4.    Institute of Management Information System (IMIS)

Nigeria Computer Society: was formed with the aim of becoming the umbrella body of all information technology (IT) professionals in Nigeria. This body was formed in 1978. Over the years this group has grown wide and presently has the following interest groups:

a)    Information Technology Association of Nigeria (ITAN)

b)   Nigerian Women in Technology (NIWIIT)

c)    Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria (ISPON)

d)   Internet Service Providers Association of Nigeria (ISPAN)

e)    Nigeria Association of Computer Science Students (NACOSS)

Computer Professional Registration Council of Nigeria: was established by Act 49 of 1993. This council is primarily charged with the responsibility for building up local information technology (IT) capacity as well as the regulation of IT practice in Nigeria. Duties of the CPRN include;

1.    To determine what standards of knowledge and skills are to be attained by persons seeking to become members of the computing profession and improving those standards from time to time as circumstance may permit.

2.    To establish and maintain a register of persons seeking to be registered to practice the computing profession in Nigeria and publication from time to time, of the list of these persons.

3.    To establish and implement a program of accreditation of computer training institutions in Nigeria.

Information Technology Association of Nigeria: is an association of over more than 350 information driven companies in Nigeria. It was founded in 1991 to promote IT literacy and penetration in Nigeria and to promote members’ interest in the area of trade, public policy formulation and negotiation with government on IT policy matters. ITAN was initially established as Microcomputer Vendors’ Association of Nigeria (MIVAN)

Institute of Management Information System: was established with the aim of supporting and improving the profession of information management system. They also foster better understanding of the significance of information systems management to common users.
