TOPIC: Charts and Graphs  

OBJECTIVE:

At the end of this topic, you should be able to:

1. Insert a chart on excel spreadsheet.

2. State the types of charts                 

Introduction

A chart, also called graph is a graphical representation of data, in which the data is represented by symbols such as lines in a line chart, or slices in a pie chart.

A chart can represent tabular numeric data, functions or some kind of qualitative structure and provides different information.

 

How to insert a Chart

1.     Select the cells with data you want to include in your chart. Note: to make labels on your chart, remember to add a header row or column to your data.

2.     Click on “insert” on the menu bar

3.     Choose the chart type from the chart section

 

Types of Chart

1.     Pie chart: they are used to show percentages

 

2.     Column chart: they are also known as bar graphs, used to show comparisons between items of data.

 

3.     Bar chart: they are suitable charts types for comparing multiple values. Unlike column chart the bars or column run horizontally along the page rather than vertically.

 

4.     Line chart: they are also called line graphs, they are used to show trends over time. Each line in the graph shows the changes in the value of one item of data.
